A Ladies club committee comprising of 10 women met for their first meeting on17th April 1991 held at a residential home in Blacks Beach.
The monthly meetings were moved to Eimeo Road School in May 1991. Volunteers organized raffles with the proceeds going towards opening a funding account; an amount of $1000 was raised by August 1991 going towards the “Bowls Club organizing committee” (then known as the Men’s Club). The Ladies Club became provisionally affiliated with QLBA at this time to allow for a Liquor License to be obtained for functions.
The first meeting held in the new Club House was on 4th March 1992, “It was noted in the minutes that members were thrilled to be able to hold their meetings in the club house, and that all members brought along their own chairs”.
The Clubhouse (The Tin Shed as it was affectionately known, was completed and the President of the Queensland Ladies Bowls Association officially opened the Ladies Section on the 21st of May 1992.
The Club House facilities included, Amenities, Function/Bistro Room to sit 80 people, small Kitchen, Cool-Room, bar, small Veranda and one grassed Bowling Green.
Mixed bowls commenced on the 5th of July 1992 and as there was no catering at the club, the ladies were asked to do Afternoon Tea. This progressed to the lady’s club starting Friday Night meals at the club.
The Club started playing Championship Competitions, and the Ladies & Men entered Pennants for the first time 1993.
The Men’s section and the club was also officially opened by the President of Royal Queensland Bowls Association in April 1993. The first Club Manager (Doug Dalley) and 12 gaming machines were introduced in March 1993, before this date all work to carry out the general operations of the Club was achieved on a voluntary basis.
The number of members and visitors flowing through our front door increased in conjunction with a growing Northern Beaches area. “The Tin Shed” simply had outgrown itself. The Board of Directors and members decided to progress and build again. These extensions would include new, Amenities, Function/Bistro to sit 250, Foyer, Reception, Administration Offices, Indoor Kids Area, TAB Area, Gaming Room for 30 machines and a new state of the art Kitchen. This extension was officially opened on the 12th May 1996.
In May 1998 the Men’s and Ladies Club adopted an amalgamated constitution and became as one with a Board of Directors Overseeing the running of the Club’s business affairs.
With the assistance of the Queensland Government funding was available to avail the Club with a second bowling green including an extractable Shade Cover; this was officially opened on the 12th of February 2006.
As people continue to move into the Northern Beaches area, The Mackay Northern Beaches Bowls Club, “The Bowlsie” continues to provide a modern and friendly facility as a preferred meeting place for the surrounding community.
The board and members of Mackay Northern Beaches Bowls Club continued policy of reinvesting all the Clubs surplus back into our community via sponsorship, donations and providing better facilities for the community has this time fostered the newly completed refurbishment.
